SUPANOVA BRISBANE 2012 COSTUME WRITE UP FOR.......MEDUSA!!!!
Here is a write up on how I made my medusa, I get annoyed when cosplayers are all secretive and are like "No you can't know how to do that or no I won't tell you what Pattern I used or any helpful information". Also on a lighter note, there are people who share information and tutorials. I am not here to name names or say the people who don't share info are bad people. I want the cosplay community to be wonderful and inviting and just full of love and rainbows. Like you find on cosplay.com.
ANYWHO Where do I begin with this nightmare hahahhaa.
Pattern:
Dress: Butterick B4343
Kimono sleeves: Was based off my Hinoto sleeves. I can't remember the pattern number ^.^;
The Collar: was hand drafted by me, so if you like any advice, feel free to PM me
sleeve: based off my rikku warrior leotard which was kwiksew pattern
Fabric:
Purple Satin
white cotton fabric
Beads and Rhinestones:
6mm and 3 mm pearl plastic beads
25mm red
20mm crystal blue
8mm red
50mm Crystal blue
Red pearl tear drops
Making of the dress:
It was pretty simple to follow the pattern and pin it all, drew out a pattern for the sleeves on newspaper and tested it out on muslim fabric, i only wish i made it a bit more roomier. I sewed the white band of fabric in (this was surprising painful) The kimono sleeve was then sewn on. I quickly screwed up here and didn't create a train into the dress i attached it on afterwards. MY FIRST TRAIN wheeee.
Collar:
Collar was a half a circle and then cut on fabric, it actually took me at least 5 attempts to get it straight, the right height. I had to make the collar of the dress lower to accommodate the collar.
The wig:
I made the wig excalty likeMedusa, her height. My height is 5ft 3 so my wig is 5ft 3 in length. I took a base short wig trimed that, then got i think it was a 60inch wig and followed this tutorial: [link] (pretty easy once you get the hand of it) then I brought a shorter wig which was 30inchs (i think O.o) and got allot of elastic bands PVA glue and glued and banded it on. Since the ribbons cover it, it doesn't matter how messy it looks underneath as long as it sits flat.
Snakes tail
Well I had planned a snakes tail but with the way the month it was going and the con was and the non stop costume ruining rain on the day, I decided against it. I luckily found $8 shoes at a K-mart (us Australian's out there), They were snake skin and looking fabulous.
Make-up and other bits:
Purple lipstick, you wouldn't think it would be hard to find purple lipstick on or during the month of October (halloween) but I found some in L'oreal 9i thought right, $50 later...but nope $12) BARAGIN!!!!
The nails (which i didn't put on) where these long beautiful nails that i got from K-mart.
OVERALL:
Beads and wigs don't go well, cyclonic weather with deadly rain doesn't work well with a costume
(the con wasn't undercover properly)
Allot of people in a confined place wasn't fun, no where to sit wasn't fun. BUT seeing your friends and YOU knowing how much you put in in 8 months just makes you smile. The rain and wind ruined my costume and could only wear it for 3hrs...I will get better photos...DERP FACE in allot of photos
